Phoenix
canariensis
The massive appearance of the Phoenix canariensis
makes it the grand daddy of palms for Southern
California. Native to the Canary Islands,
the canariensis makes a formal statement in
any landscape setting. This palm can withstand
tremendous neglect. Thousands are growing
in abandoned areas of Southern California
and appear healthy without proper irrigation
and fertilization. It withstands cold to 20
degrees and anything else nature hands out
in our environment. It is susceptible to numerous
fungal diseases, so do not over water. Give
it space, spans of 30 feet are common over
time. When trimmed, the Phoenix canariensis
is one of the most beautiful palms you can
have. At left is one of many in the San Diego
landscape.
